Open PhD position in biomedical aging research:
The role of Nsun5 in ribosome function and mammalian healthy lifespan

We found recently that loss of the Nsun5 gene leads to increased lifespan and stress resistance of
yeast, worms and flies (Schosserer et al., Nature Communications, 2015). However, if Nsun5, or other enzymes modifying ribosomal RNA, are capable of modulating healthy lifespan of vertebrates is not known. Thus, the aims of this project encompass the measurement of the lifespan of Nsun5 knockout mice. We will further evaluate if loss of Nsun5 improves health and ameliorates frailty at advanced age of animals. Finally, we will investigate if and how loss of Nsun5 impacts on general and specific protein synthesis.

Methods:

- Phenotyping and genotyping of mice
- Animal cell culture
- Analysis of RNA modifications
- Analysis of ribosome function- Raman microspectroscopy

Requirements:

- Master of science (MSc) or equivalent degree in biotechnology, molecular/cellular biology, or a related discipline
- Documented research experience with molecular and cellular biology methods, experience with RNA is preferred
- Research experience with mice is not required, but preferred
- High accuracy in scientific work and its documentation
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

Duration: 3 years
Start: April 2018
Deadline: 31.01.2018
